Alegria
Alegria, “jubilation or joy” in Spanish was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Cirque du Soleil. This show is described as a frame of mind – depicting clowns who resist to the change of time, to political crisis and to social transformations. The characters of this Cirque du Soleil show range in age of 10 to 45 years old and perform as kings’ fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children - along with clowns. The set of Alegría represents a king’s court with a dome around the stage to protect the artists as a castle would protect the town. The emotional state of Alegría involves contrasting themes of power and the handing down of power throughout the generations, the progression from ancient kingdoms to modern democracy, old age and youth. However, the clowns of this universe are the only characters able to defy the transitory of time and the social changes that accompany it.
